So, I froze the seeds for several days, and planted the peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, safflower, red epazote, wonderberries (from the 3-fruit fuse), West India burr gherkins, Stevia, Glass Gem corn, Spicy Globe Bush basil, and probably other stuff. They've been in the greenhouse since about Friday. I just watered them.

The velcro on the greenhouse isn't working as well, this year (it's very old for a store-bought tent-like greenhouse). So, the vents have been coming open. I'll have to pin them shut with safety pins or something. I have rocks weighing down the sides, to ensure cold air doesn't come through there. the black plastic underneath it will hopefully help to warm it.

It's supposed to be alarmingly cold for a couple days soon. So, I'm thinking about just bringing the trays in the house those nights. They'll probably sprout faster and more abundantly that way.

I've been taking the seed trays in the house at night for the last two nights, and I plan to do it again tonight, due to unusually cold weather.

The Corrales Azafrán safflower is the first thing to have sprouted. It sprouted, today:



I guess they sprout faster in last year's mix, or conditions. Most species of plants took longer to sprout in last year's mix, however.

It looks like the Shungiku sprouted, too (it's hard to tell in the picture, but they're clearly sprouting to the naked eye):

I was surprised and impressed (and pleased) that the Galapagos Island tomato whose fruit survived lots of freezes germinated the fastest and most abundantly of all my tomatoes, this year! Strangely, the 5-chamber Galapagos Island hasn't sprouted at all, yet. Galapagos Island has never before contended for the fastest sprouting (it hasn't been the slowest, either). Hopefully, it's genetic, but it could be that all those freezes helped the germination.

I thought Large Red Cherry already sprouted on a previous day, but I don't see any plants in it, today. Maybe a grasshopper ate it. One of the Marzano Fire seedlings and maybe another plant or two had been topped by an insect. Fortunately, that Marzano Fire container had another seedling in it. I located a grasshopper and removed it from the greenhouse—but there may be more.

I think the plants got too hot on at least one day before today, as well as today itself. Some of them seem to have some damage as a result, and some seem fine (some are coming up with very thin stems and leaves). And/or, I may have over-done amendments at planting time. If future seeds in the same containers are fine, it was probably just the heat.

Oh, the first Sheboygan to sprout is one of those thin ones, but it's a tricot, too! I hope it gets thicker and is fine.

One observation I have is that the black plastic seems to make the greenhouse a lot hotter (such that there's more risk of over-heating the plants). I don't think I should put it on black plastic next year (and maybe I should even move it, this year, if I can find a place).

Alas, most of the plants froze on Monday morning. It's getting cold again tomorrow morning (so, the plants are in the house).

Fortunately, my 3-fruit fuse wonderberry plant (only one has sprouted, probably because of the heat by the edge of the greenhouse) is alive and looking good.

There are still plants, of course. The tomatillos weren't bothered by the cold or heat, either.

I plan to replant some things, whether or not I do it tonight. Some nice people are sending me some more seeds for some of those wherein I'm out of seeds.

I replanted most of the things that died. I'm keeping them in the house tonight (not because I have to, but because it just felt cold out there, and I wanted them to be warm to speed germination).

I planted some different kinds in place of some of those I'm out of. The different kinds include, but aren't necessarily limited to these:

This post is to catch up on things that have happened (not necessarily today).

The plants have been back in the greenhouse for some days. The large vent was in tatters; so, I took it off the greenhouse. some of the velcro on the greenhouse has lost it's ability to stick (making it more difficult to close the main opening).

We have onions, potatoes, and snow peas planted outside.

Two potato plants from last year have sprouted.

The artichoke plant is looking nice.

The alpine strawberries (and Tresca and/or Fresca) are flowering (many of them, anyway). The alpine strawberries that did don't look diseased anymore. I dug up the regular Ozark Beauty strawberries, except for the one with the least chlorosis (they were quite chlorotic). The seed-grown Ozark Beauty and especially the seed-grown Quinault are struggling, perhaps due to being undersized (Tresca and Fresca are looking much better, though).

The sweet potatoes are in the kitchen windowsill waiting for it to get warm enough to plant them outside. Ants have colonized that windowsill, and have been drinking the water from the sweet potato jars rather thirstily, like animals at a watering hole in Africa.

I moved some sunroots to another location, but there are still plenty to dig up in the old locations.

I split up some He Shi Ko bunching onions to get more plants growing, and transplanted three Crimson Forest bunching onions by them.

It rained, today, in the evening (while still light). It just stopped recently, I think.

I haven't been tracking what's been sprouting and dying (aftershock from the previous cold/heat, and damping-off from indoors) in the greenhouse, much, but new things have been sprouting and some old things have been dying (including Neves Azorean Red). I plan to record things after I'm sure eveything that's going to live is going to live; or, perhaps I'll do it at transplant time.

A few more wonderberries from the three-fruit fuse sprouted.

Morelle De Balbis sprouted, I think when it was indoors, but at least one plant in the cell probably died.

The sunroots sprouted yesterday or so. They took a while, this year, but they sprouted.

I transplanted quite a few tomatoes, today (including the Mexican Yellow cross, all the Brandy Boy crosses, except those I might give away, both Galapagos Island tomatoes, one Marion #1 tomato, Blue Berries, Isis Candy, Eva, Money Maker, Chris Ukrainian, Chocolate Chestnut, the Medovaya Kaplya cross, and a bunch of others). These are the first I've transplanted, this year.

The Black Cherry tomato finally sprouted.

All of the muskmelons, and most of the watermelons sprouted by today. Both Cushaw White squash in the greenhouse and a number of them outside with the sunroots have sprouted, too. The Shark fin Melon squash seeds (which were direct-seeded in a spot with black plastic) sprouted, by today (eight plants in one spot sprouted); they are where Aunt Gertie's Gold was last year.

The tomato transplants are looking good. Some of them looked thirsty; so, I watered all of them.

Okay, on the evening of 11 May 2020 (Monday), I transplanted a bunch more tomatoes, which I plan to endeavor to record here on the 12th. I just finished watering them all. I also transplanted and watered the safflower in two spots without splitting it up; the leaves on both plants were yellowing, but it hadn't spread to the surrounding tomatoes in the greenhouse; so, I'm not sure what it is, if it's an issue.

Some tomatoes that I remember transplanting are Purple Calabash (both), Red Calabash, Pink Cheeks (both), My Sweet Plourde, Yellow Plum, Brown Berry, Brad's Atomic Grape, Riesentraube, Marion (store seeds), Chadwick Cherry, Juliet F2, Austin's Black Cherry, Cosmic Eclipse, Bear Creek, Summer of Love, and plenty of others.

Sans the area that the greenhouse covers, and the area north of it, the south middle garden plot is full (of tomatoes).

I just transplanted the tomatillos into containers (5-gallon and 4-gallon buckets). I had two large cells with tomatillos, each overseeded. I put the entirety of one cell in a 5-gallon bucket, to perhaps thin later (so as not to disturb the roots). The other cell, I split up into four portions, each portion for its own container. So, we should see if it's worth not splitting them up to get more plants.

The tomatillos are looking really good this year.

On 12 May 2020, I gave the sweet potatoes (recently transplanted) and the tomatoes that hadn't received wood ash some potassium sulfate. Then, I re-transplanted My Sweet Plourde to a slightly different location (not because I wanted to). There was a tree stump and a Green Globe artichoke right next to its old spot, anyway, though. I'll probably put a sunroot  there instead (it'll just grow up, instead of very wide)—sunroots seem to grow into stumps (so, I'm hoping maybe it'll help the stump to decompose).
